Size-based Adaptive Bandwidth Allocation: Optimizing the Average QoS for Elastic Flows

ثبت نشده
چکیده

With a view on improving user perceived performance on networks supporting elastic flows, e.g., multimedia/data file transfers, we identify the key properties that an online bandwidth allocation policy should have. We then propose a family of bandwidth allocation criteria which depends on the network state, namely, the residual work of on-going transfers. Analysis and simulations show that allocating bandwidth in this fashion can improve the user perceived average bit transmission delay (BTD), i.e., delay/job size, by 50%-66% over traditional approaches. A simple implementation based upon TCP Reno, exemplifies how one might approach practically realizing such gains. In addition, we show that achieving the same performance improvements by simply adding capacity is “expensive”, requiring capacity to be augmented by about 40-50%. Moreover, for networks such as the Internet, where forecasting loads and dimensioning links is challenging, and thus transient or even persistent overloads are hard to avoid, we show that differentiating bandwidth allocations based on job size, provides an effective means to achieve “graceful” performance degradation. Flow-level QoS for a dynamic load of rate adaptive sessions sharing a bottleneck link

We consider the flow-level quality of service (QoS) seen by a dynamic load of rate adaptive sessions sharing a bottleneck link based on fair share bandwidth allocation. This is of interest both in considering wired networks supporting rate adaptive multimedia sessions and wireless networks supporting voice with rate adaptation to realize graceful degradation during congested periods. Two QoS me...

END-TO-END QoS MANAGEMENT FOR ADAPTIVE VIDEO FLOWS

Distributed audio and video applications need to adapt to fluctuations in delivered quality of service (QoS). By trading off temporal and spatial quality to available bandwidth, or manipulating the playout time of continuous media in response to variation in delay, audio and video flows can be made to adapt to fluctuating QoS with minimal perceptual distortion. In this paper we introduce dynami...

Meeting QoS Challenges for Scalable Video Flows in Multimedia Networking

Many distributed audio and video applications exhibit robustness in adapting to fluctuations in the delivered quality of service (QoS). By trading off temporal and spatial quality to available bandwidth, or manipulating the playout time of continuous media in response to variation in delay, audio and video flows can be kept meaningful at the playout device with minimal perceptual distortion. In...
